The county of Sussex is made up of the two Susseses ? West and East and has two cities as well as large number of notable towns. The two cities are Brighton and Chichester. Both of these cities are home to universities and are very near the south coast of England.

Some towns of note in Sussex include Arundel, Bognor Regis, Bexhill-on-Sea, Burgess Hill, Crawley, Eastbourne, Hastings, Horsham, Lewes, Petworth, Rye and WorthingCrawley, Eastbourne, Hastings, Horsham, Lewes, Petworth, Rye, Arundel, Bognor Regis, Bexhill-on-Sea, Burgess Hill and Worthing.

Sussex as a county stands close to the ancient kingdom of Sussex which was originally populated in the 12th Century. Roughly a century and a half after Arundel Castle was built. The castle was damaged in the English Civil War, but was restored during the 18th and 19th centuries. Arundel is a small market town on the South Downs and sits on the River Arun.

Brighton is not just a university town, but also a very popular seaside resort, just like Bognor Regis. Brightons Piers are world famous. The West Pier suffered a lot of damage in 2003 when it was set on fire. It is planned to replace the pier with a landmark called i360, this will be a 172m high tower, with views across the area.

One of the largest towns in East Susses is Lewes it is the county town of East Sussex and is located on the River Ouse. With a population of approximatly 16,000 and is famous for its excellent bonfire celebrations on November 5th.

The town of East Grinstead is in West Suxxex with a population of twentynine tousand. The town has the headquarters in the UK of the Church of Scientology. The town, like many other towns in Sussex, is a commuter town for London.

Sussex is also home to the second busiest airport in the UK ? Gatwick Airport. Gatwick is located in Crawley and is owned by BAA. In 2007 Gawtick saw over thirtyfive million people. Three of the big airlines operate from Gatwick airport ? British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and EasyJet.

Another well known town in Sussex is Worthing, the borough has a population of almost one hundred thousand and is served by five railway stations ? East worthing, Worthing, West Worthing, Durrington-on-Sea and Goring.
